A Golfclub Denies Membership

golfclub A golfclub in Vancouver Canada is denying membership to non-English speaking patrons. This situation is similar to the controversy surrounding the LPGA denying membership to non-English speakers.

This particular club, named the Vancouver Golf Club, opened over 100 years ago. The general manager explained that this policy was designed to make sure that all members are able to understand the rules and communicate with club staff. Those who do try to apply, with the aid of a translator, are asked to take language courses and reapply at a later time. Professor Inzlicht of the University of Toronto remarked, "Not speaking English does not exclude one from good manners, does not exclude one from being a very good golf player, so if you're really worried about rules and regulations.... there's definitely some other ways of getting around this."
